Windows 10 Technical Preview is out and you can get your hands on it by joining the Windows Insider Program. What you need to get your hands dirty with it is a virtualization software like VMware Workstation, Oracle Virtualbox or one of the enterprise hypervisors like vSphere (ESXi), Hyper-V etc, with atleast 2 GB RAM & around 20 GB disk space to spare. For a detailed system requirement and other pre-install FAQs click here.
I used VMware Workstation 10.
Select Create a New Virtual Machine either from Home, from menu File > New Virtual Machine or through the shortcut key Ctrl + N.
Select the following options:
1 – Typical (recommended)
2 – Installer disc image file (iso) [browse and select the Windows 10 Technical Preview ISO]
3 – Set Guest operating system to Microsoft Windows & Version to Windows 8 x64 (VMware Workstation does not support Windows 10 as of now and hence does not have an option).
4 – Next set a Virtual machine name and location for virtual machine files.
5 – Leave defaults & proceed
6 – At the final screen, select Customize and change Memory to 2GB (by default it is 1 GB)
7 – Finish
Power on the virtual machine to start the virtual machine creation process.
I wont go through the Windows 10 installation process in detail 🙂 considering there is nothing really to it. But to summarize:
1 – Set language, time & currency format and keyboard settings
2 – Click Install Now
3 – Accept License terms
4 – Select Custom install (Advanced)
5 – Select drive (there’s only 1)
6 – Relax and let Windows do the rest
After the final reboot, the initial settings screen appears. You can choose to customize or Use express settings. I chose the later.
Next connection as usual and prompts you to either use a Microsoft account or create a local account. In case it fails to detect an internet connection it prompts you to create a local account. I created a local account.
Click Finish to finalize the installation and log on to Windows Desktop.
